So what is a space opera? A space opera is a colorful, dramatic, large-scale science fiction adventure set in the distant future and based in space or on another planet. Space operas are usually focused on a sympathetic and heroic central character and plot action. Stories are characteristically optimistic in tone, but often deals with war, piracy, military virtues, and very large-scale action. In other words there are usually large stakes. If you need an example of typical space operas try Star Trek, the original or re-worked Battlestar Galactica, or Star Wars.
While stories must focus on a space opera theme, they must also be erotic. Sex scenes should be hot. Creativity is encouraged. However, keep in mind that the book’s primary focus is a general heterosexual market. This doesn’t mean that all stories need to be heterosexual. But stories that stray from the heterosexual perspective should be designed to challenge the reader’s heterosexual viewpoint. In other words turn the reader on and make them wonder what it would be like to engage in an encounter that is outside of their comfort zone. Also, keep in mind that while the actual sex should be creative, it must also be realistic. Don’t describe a sexual position that is physically impossible for your characters to perform. Finally, all sex scenes must be presented positively and must contribute to the plot or character development.
