Behind the Whip In Front of the Camera: Maria Coletsis at International Fetish Film Festival

Power is what can make a person grow, a subculture grow and art grow. In her book and documentary Behind the Whip: Dominatrix, photographer Maria Coletsis travelled the world to see this growth in person, subculture and art, interviewing women who have embraced their life as dominatrixes.

What inspired Behind the Whip?
Meeting Mistress Vanessa while living in London inspired the whole project. Through her and our photographs, I became interested in the world of a Dominatrix. Ultimately, I travelled to different cities to photograph and speak with many of these diverse and unique women.

What initially drew you to the world of Dominance?
The honesty of knowing who you are and what you like. I think it takes a lot of courage to really understand the layers of desire in one’s self.
When did you think the book work would also make a compelling documentary?
Initially I wanted to document the whole project for myself but as the cities and photos started to grow, so did the footage. It evolved and began to get very informative and personal, and definitely worth sharing.

As society becomes more interested in Dominance and Submission, do you think we could see more people living open, “authentic” lives in these roles?
Absolutely.

What are you working on that we can look forward to in the future?
I have been working on a series of photographs that explore the fetish “Hood”. The model in all the images is Kim of London’s Club Rub fetish club. She introduced me to Mistress Vanessa who needed a photographer and then I made a book and short film, Behind the Whip: Dominatrix. Enjoy!
