Trans Woman Banned—The Star’s Incorrect Language

My first thought when reading this article, about a trans woman who has been banned from a grocery store because she used the women’s bathroom was justifiably “how awful!”

But there are two levels of crap with this article. Though it looks like a wire story, The Toronto Star needs to take responsibility for this statement:

Alberto Robledo of Lewiston, who goes by Ally”

NO! If this person goes by Ally, then call her Ally! Argue legalities, but the social convention is to call a person by the name they identify with. By using Ally’s former name denies and diminishes her trans experience.
