Okay, I thought it only responsible to watch the first two episodes of Sex Sent Me to the ER, a new re-enactment/reality show about people who end up in hospital emergency rooms because of health concerns related to sex.
Part of me thinks this show does have some value. The ailments covered in the first two episodes are (SPOILER ALERT):
- Man with broken penis when threesome goes wrong (followed by a lacerated tongue after a fake apology kiss—not for him, but between his two female companions)
- Man suffer stroke after he has an orgasm, turns out he has a hole in his heart
- Woman has minor head trauma after her large boyfriend slams into her too hard causing her head to go through the wall.
- Woman has three-hour orgasm which leads to a year of multiple, daily spontaneous orgasms. After a year of trial and error with meds, she is determined to be bipolar and proper meds control the situation
- Women has significant tearing after an unlubricated quickie
- Man has heart attack that cannot be treated after being confronted by wife when she finds him in the hospital being treated for broken bones after being thrown out his window by the sex worker he’d been partying with (with erection pills and coke) who he’d refused to pay
Now, what do I possibly find redeeming about this show? Well, it can let people know that medical incidents can happen during or after sex. Using lube is a great thing to teach. Living healthy to help avoid strokes. Be careful taking erection pills, don’t mix them with other substances. Mood-altering medication is tricky when treating unusual symptoms.
These things might seem like common knowledge, but they aren’t for everyone.
On the other hand, the show is presented in such a fake way. The acting is atrocious. Even when the actual patients are shown, they tell there stories in such a terribly-scripted way. The show comes off as a joke sensationalizing serious situations. There could be some really great learning moments here, but they are ruined because of the show’s presentation.
Very (but hardly surprisingly) disappointing.
