Shame. Ridicule. Rejection. Whether it’s sizeism, age-ism, ableism, racism, sexualism or genderism, shame and fear of rejection (both internal and external) are used to limit our sexual self-expression. Conventional media teaches us we are too fat, too ugly, too old, or too different to be attractive and to be sexual. Our own internalized beliefs about body image and identity are reinforced and created by a barrage of information about how we “should” be before we are allowed to feel sexy or be sexual. By identifying the negative messages in media, and in our heads, we can begin the process of freeing ourselves from the rules and the roles we’ve been trapped in, and start allowing our unique sexual self-expression to emerge.
