I have a budding interest in comic books and have been thinking about exploring the many stories out there more.
Incidents like this make me wonder about that.
I have often thought of the comic universe as fairly open and progressive, but as Alex Yarde points out, DC is certainly not living up to that.
Because I follow a particular podcast that regulalry discusses Spiderman, I am a bit aware of the transformations that character, as Yarde notes, has undergone. Pretty damn drastic ones!
So then what is the issue with an acknowledged and specifically written lesbian character getting married? Spiderman makes a pact with the devil…but marriage pact is disallowed? [insert your own joke about marriage = pact with the devil here]
I have significant respect for writers J.H Williams and W. Haden Blackman for walking away from the project rather than bow to this censorship. DC deserves to be ridiculed and I hope this is something addressed in discussions at comic cons and all over the web.
Better yet, I hope comic fans speak with their wallets. Though you may love the character, do not buy the coming issues. Write to DC and tell them you will not support this backward thinking.
Who knew a superheroes most difficult challenge would be marrying the woman she loves…
