Bedroom Explorations at International Fetish Film Fest!

Bedrooms seem to be a paradoxical space. They can be both intensely confidential, affectionate and sexual—but they can also be distancing and cold when there are issues in a relationship.
Director Jordan Canning explores our relationship with this space in the short film Bedroom, screening this week at the International Fetish Film Festival.

What inspired your film Bedroom?
Bedroom is actually the first in a trilogy of short films that I made with co-creator Jody Richardson called The House Series. Bedroom, Kitchen and Bathroom were all written to be shot in different rooms of the same house. We wanted to write for actors we knew and construct scenes that could be filmed with a very small crew (often just myself and the actors) and little-to-no budget. Jody wrote Bedroom over a few weeks in the fall, and then we workshopped and rehearsed the script extensively with the cast—Robert Joy and Megan Jones. As soon as I read Jody’s script, I was struck by the weight of what these two characters were going through. What was being said, and what wasn’t. I really didn’t want to impose on the intimacy of the performance, and always hoped to let it play out in one long shot. On the day I played it safe and got some close up coverage shots which we never ended up using. But I remember watching this one take—the take that ended up being the entire film—where we all just thought “That was it. We got it.” It was so exciting.

Would it be better for couples to have important intimate conversations outside the bedroom?
I’m not sure location should really matter when it comes to important personal discussions—what’s key is being able to have them in the first place—but I certainly think the bedroom is a natural intimate space. It’s where we sleep, it’s where we undress, it’s where we have sex. We hide inside them, but it’s also where we reveal ourselves to people.

Are you comfortable talking in your bedroom?
I always feel a little more comfortable talking in the dark.

What are you currently working on that we can look forward to?
I am in pre-production right now for a web series I am directing called ‘Space Riders’, and have a number of feature films in development.
