Call For Submissions

The Emma Press Anthology of Mildly Erotic Verse
Publisher: Emma Press
Deadline: 17th May 2013
Payment: £25

Let’s be clear: this book will blow your socks off.

Yes, it’s only mildly erotic, but aren’t mildly erotic things in fact the most erotic of all? The understated and allusive can hint at a whole lot more than some workaday description of whips and welts. This book is more likely to make you widen your eyes slightly and smile before surreptitiously eyeing up passers-by and wondering if you can rearrange your plans for the evening.

The Emma Press Anthology of Mildly Erotic Verse will be published in September 2013. It will feature poems from a number of different poets and be fully illustrated like The Flower and the Plough, with black line drawings. We are accepting submissions, so read on for more information.

What we’re looking for

Above all, we’re looking for good writing. The erotic element of the poems can be as apparent or barely-there as you like, but the writing has got to tick all the boxes: metre, pacing, form, language, and metre. Metre metre metre. The poems may need further editing, but if you can show that you can write then you’ll have our attention.

As far as the mildly erotic element goes, you can come at it from whichever direction you like. What makes writing good and what makes it erotic are both highly subjective, so please don’t be offended if our tastes don’t match yours. We will read everything, however, and respond with our thoughts.

Length-wise, the maximum is about 3 sides of a normal paperback book.

What’s the deal for the poets?

We envisage using about 15 poets for the book. If we get lot of high-quality entries, we’ll probably publish two mildly erotic volumes instead. Full terms and conditions still need to be worked out, but there will be a £25 advance for each poet (not per poem, as it says in Writing Magazine sorry!), because writing for free sucks after a while.

How to submit

Email emma [at] theemmporium.com, with up to four poems you think might be suitable and a brief covering letter. Please attach the poem(s) in a single Word document so it’s easy for us to print out.

Deadline for submissions: Friday 17th May 2013.
