Why Do People Study Sex?

I know that I find myself among readers who likely fancy themselves as potential sexologists. I would love to get into the field, and maybe one day I will be able to make a career switch. In the meantime, I’m just going to lap up other people’s work, writing and hosting workshops.
When I think of why I am not pursuing this work, I also have to consider why I would want to become a sexologist. My motivations? An insatiable desire to always learn more about sex. A desire to help others. A hope to dispel myths, stereotypes and stigma about sex.
How about actual sexologists? Why are they deep in this field?
And here is why I love sexologists: they conducted a study on why the are sexologists! And Dr. Kristen Mark outlines how the study does dispel one popular stereotype about how people perceive sexologists.
As it turns out, if you get into sex studies, people are going to assume you are doing it to improve your own sexual satisfaction. This makes me wonder if people think the same about dentists (I want better teeth!) and podiatrists (I want better feet!).
