Now this is a hot button topic—Sexual Surrogacy (via VivaXO)—and Dr. Justin Lehmiller gives a good introduction to the issues surrounding the touchy topic.
Personally, I’m not sure why there are ethic or even legal disputes. And I’m going to bring back an old argument—with a twist.
If you are a professional athlete, and you are injured, you will go through rehabilitation for that injury. In many cases, that rehab will involve physical touch by a practitioner.
Does it not stand to reason then, that if you are suffering from some sort of sexual dysfunction then you should then be allowed to seek treatment with a practitioner?
Apparently not because there is a belief that sexual issues can be helped through psychological and medical work.
If an athlete blows out a knee, needs reconstructive surgery…is he or she then told to have surgery and then talk to a shrink and it’ll heal? No! Rehab is ordered.
Another argument I find ridiculous is that of sex surrogates being nothing more than glorified prostitutes. This is just another example of our prevalent sex-negative culture. Are chiropractors prostitutes? They manipulate your body to produce pleasure, via pain management. Are psychiatrists prostitutes? They are providing therapy to aid with disfunction. So why then demonize sex surrogates?
As for ethical issues with sex surrogates, refer back to sex negativity. We have people to treat every single other part of our bodies, minds and souls…but treating our sex is still taboo.
Maybe if we can get over that, we’ll move forward in other areas and let this valuable practice help people.
