Hairy Ain’t Scary!

Love this work by Lucie Blush about the joys of hair acceptance. As a North American dude growing up and enjoying pornography and pop culture, the idea of a hairy woman was just wrong. Literally, other dudes will say that a woman with bush, hairy armpits, hairy legs…any and all of it was wrong. Part of me realized this made no sense, especially when people thought Sinead O’Connor was such a freak for having a shaved head. My brain was thinking, “so, why should she have hair there but not anywhere else?”

Well, the brain took a lot longer to get up to speed with things. I’ll readily admit to falling into the trap of hairlessness for women. Not to say I’ve ever shamed anyone to be hairless in anyway, but I certainly grew up expecting it.

Finally, as should happen with all of us, life experience helped me understand just how ridiculous this hairless body standard is. If you want to be hairy and it makes you comfortable, by all means, let it flow in the wind. If you prefer to not be hairy and remove your hair, go right ahead and trim and shave away. The key is that you are hopefully not expected to be either for someone, or society’s, sake.

Personally, I like hairy bodies most of the time. However, I do on occasion like shaved bits and pieces. Part of that might come from the fact I like doing the shaving, but that’s a different story…
