Google, Grantland and the Politics of Identity

This article, contrasting trans people being intentionally and unintentionally outed is a must read. The incomparable Violet Blue strikes right on both sides. The complete lack of journalistic integrity and empathy by Caleb Hannan and Grantland are shocking.

Was there much to make a story of? Yes. Was Dr. Essay Anne Vanderbilt’s identity integral to it? Not at all. But it was sensational. It depicted the duplicitous trans person, a sadly common stereotype and portrayal which likely had them rubbing their hands in glee. It resulted in a death.

And then Google, with their complete lack of understanding and lack of action in rolling out their latest candy-confection, show why all companies, big and small, need education. This was a really stupid mistake on their parts that developers and project managers should have caught. And the subsequent inaction? Their response teams should be fired.
